This book is not a contemporary christian book, nor does it pretend to be spiritual. Though it doesn't discuss God, it does discuss some issues that are very essential to understanding the unstoppable force of Jesus' followers. Notice I don't directly relate this to the church. Not every church operates as true Christ followers. Unfortunately, many churches in America severely miss the mark when it comes to fleshing out their beliefs in everyday life. Traits that follow a church who is trying to exemplify Christ to this world include an infectious loving spirit, fresh insight, and a truly unstoppable impact on the community they inhabit. This is where the importance between starfish and spiders comes into play.

A spider has eight legs and a head. Cut off one of it's legs and you are left with a spider that has seven legs and one useless leg. The spider's web, though it is made out of some of the strongest material in the world, can easily be compromised. You simply find the spider and kill it by crushing it's head. The web will be overcome quickly by the elements and will no longer be effective. Now let's consider a starfish. To be more specific there are two types of starfish we're concerned with. The red and blue Linckia starfish. These starfish are unique in that an attempt to kill them by cutting off one of the arms will only serve to strengthen it. These starfish will not only regenerate a new ray to replace the one that has been taken, but also the ray that was cut off will grow into a new complete starfish. This is possible because the vital organs are replicated in each ray. This truth makes a good spiritual point as well.Gamaliel was a wise Pharisee who understood this comcept in Acts 5 when he addressed the assembly in regards to Peter and the apostles:

"Men of Israel, consider carefully what you intend to do to these men. Some time ago Theudas appeared, claiming to be somebody, and about four hundred men rallied to him. He was killed, all his followers were dispersed, and it all came to nothing. After him, Judas the Galilean appeared in the days of the census and led a band of people in revolt. He too was killed, and all his followers were scattered. Therefore, in the present case I advise you: Leave these men alone! Let them go! For if their purpose or activity is of human origin, it will fail. But if it is from God, you will not be able to stop these men; you will only find yourselves fighting against God."

How would you characterize your faith? Do you and your church depend upon your pastor or some other dynamic individual to carry and lead your organization? or is the gospel so ingrained into your soul, life, and surrounding community that it doesn't matter whether or not you have dynamic leadership in place? What really would happen to your witness and faith if some force scattered your church and broke that fellowship into pieces? Remember that we are responsible for our own faith. Don't like the way your church is operating? Then be the change that you want to see. Get to know your neighbors. Show them the love of Christ. Grow in faith. Seek wisdom. Not that it has been prolonged or habitual, but tonight finds me with sober thoughtfulness and pensiveness. The enemy screams things at you at moments when we should be giving the most thanks. God gives and gives and when we stop and take a look at what He has given and realize that something is missing, it's a slap in the face when we turn around and say, "what about this? Where is this other piece of my life that I was expecting?" What I am trying to say is, that life never comes as you expect it. Life never comes as you ask for it. One of the greatest keys to living a healthy life is learning how to deal with rejection, learning how to cope with loss, learning how to be best you can be in any situation. This is what Paul meant when he said that it is through Christ that he can do all things. Read that verse in context. He wasn't saying that he can leap tall buildings in a single bound...or overcome cancer. Stay strong :)
